Career Advising Meeting One (11/9) – Ruthann Coyote

Going into my meeting with Ruthann, my goal was to gain insight on the application process for internships. We talked about a few points I would like to record:

  1. Resume: after applying to a few internships by the time of my meeting, I had a feeling that I needed a second opinion before applying to more positions. Ruthann acknowledged that my resume format was strong. An important suggestion she made was separating my work experience into “Relative Experience” and “Additional experience” based on each internship. She also mentioned a plan to structure the bullet points of each experience to match the adjectives and needs of the job description.
  2. Online Presence on LinkedIn: When trying to build my LinkedIn profile, I was uncertain about how much I should be posting and what exactly I should be looking for on LinkedIn. Ruthann approved of the content I had put up and gave me further advice on utilizing LinkedIn. For example she advised me to never message/email someone of interest on Monday or Friday. The reason for these specific days is because on Mondays, people are usually flooded by messages that piled up during the weekend and your outreach message might get lost. Fridays are a bad choice because people might want an early start on the weekend and turned off their work email.
  3. Networking for an internship: Ruthann mentioned that there was a Wesleyan Alumni application that I can utilize so I intend on using that platform to broaden my search. She offered the point that through this platform, I can compare LinkedIn profiles with WesConnect profiles to check the activity of both.
